play games的意思是“闹着玩；不认真对待” ，但是play the game则是指“办事公道；按章办事”，在《剑桥词典》中的英文释义为：to behave fairly。

你应该告诉他们的，保守秘密并不是办事公道。

play with fire：你这是在“玩火”呀！

汉语中，我们常用“玩火”一词来比喻干冒险或害人的勾当，俗话说玩火者必自焚。

play it cool是“装酷”吗，em……其实不太准确， 在《柯林斯词典》中是这么解释的：If you play it cool, you deliberately behave in a calm, unemotional way because you do not want people to know you are enthusiastic or angry about something.

中文来讲，也就是指“装出一副冷静的样子；故作镇定”的意思。

It's ridiculous to play it cool if someone you're mad about is mad about you too.

如果你为之生气的人也为你生气，那你还装作若无其事是很可笑的。

She didn't want to seem too eager, so she decided to play it cool.

play to the gallery是“相约画廊”？

gallery除了是“画廊；美术馆”等意思外，还有“旁听席”的意思哦！

play to the gallery字面是“表演给旁听席的人看”，引申义为“迎合大众趣味，哗众取宠”。在《麦克米伦高阶英汉双解词典》中，英文解释为：to say what you think people want to hear in order to gain popularity。

play hardball不只是和你打球！

hardball指很硬的那种棒球，打起来非常激烈，一不小心打到人的话，很有可能就会受伤。

play hardball在日常口语中引申为“不客气；激烈竞争”，甚至为达到目的“采取强硬的手段”的意思。

He's a nice guy, but he can play hardball when he needs to.
